Odinga fronts Kakamega & Kisumu counties as potential AFCON 2027 hosts

The tussle among leaders to have their regions host the 2027 Afcon games rages on with the Azimio leader Raila Odinga now pleading with the sports ministry to pick  Bukhungu stadium as one of the stops for the continental piece.

Speaking during the area governor’s cup, the Opposition leader Odinga told CS Ababu Namwanga to rein in in the county and complete renovations of the stadium

Odinga also fronted Kisumu county as a preferred destination.

Uganda has chosen Kampala, Hoima and Lira while Tanzania has chosen Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Arusha. Now for Kenya this is an opportunity for the government to improve sports facilities around the country. We already have two fairly good facilities; Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums in Nairobi, so in my view the government should have selected Kisumu and Kakamega in order to improve facilities there because as you know the centre of gravity of soccer in our country is western Kenya,” said Raila.

Leaders have been urging the government to consider upscaling  their sports facilities to accommodate the millions of visitors and players coming to experience the continent showpiece co hosted with Uganda and Tanzania under the Pamoja bid

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania the prestigious responsibility of hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) through the ‘East Africa Pamoja Bid’.

CAF specifies that each venue must be near an airport, a level-five hospital, and a five-star hotel.
