Wetangula approves Sabina Chege’s ouster as Deputy Minority Whip

Nominated MP Sabina Chege has lost her Deputy Minority whip position as Speaker Moses Wetang’ula effects Azimio leadership changes in the House.

Chege will now be replaced by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje who had been nominated by  Jubilee as her replacement.

“Currently there is no bar against the decision made by the minority party to replace its whip. In this regard, Mark Mwenje replaces Sabina Chege as the Deputy Whip of the Minority party,” Wetangula ruled.

“To give effect to the provisions of article 36 of the Constitution on freedom of association and article 38 of the Constitution on the political right which confer upon each member of the House the right to determine which entity they wish to be associated with.”

The leadership change comes after months of push and pull between the opposition, Speaker Wetangula and the Jubilee Party faction allied with President William Ruto.

The changes however occasioned months of wrangles and blame games between the above-mentioned parties.

Wetangula has clarified that the request seeking the removal of the Nominated MP as the Deputy Minority Whip would be fair and based on the rule of law.

The Azimio Coalition accused the Nominated MP of defying official party positions on numerous occasions and un-apologetically associating with Kenya Kwanza.

Kiambu High Court, however, dismissed the case on October 9 after declaring that Sabina had not exhausted all the dispute resolution mechanisms within Azimio.

The appointment of Mwenje as Sabina’s replacement was announced in June after the  Azimio la Umoja coalition announced that MP Sabina would no longer lead the outfit.
