Tifa: 3 in 10 jobless Kenyans have never been employed

Three in every 10 Kenyans who are currently jobless have never been employed.

This is according to a poll report by TIFA Research.

The report shows that eight percent of Kenyans who are currently jobless have been employed before.

The majority of Kenyans who are working are self-employed at 29 percent, with only about one in 10 employed full-time.

The report further shows 14 percent are casual laborers or on part-time self-employment, while four percent are in part-time employment.

“Even those in the two highest monthly income groupings combined (Sh20 to Sh50,00 and above Sh50,000) are fewer than those earning nothing,” the report says.

“The vast majority of Kenyans thus survive on extremely modest incomes.”

The report notes that despite Kenya having been classified as a middle-income country, the majority of the population continues to struggle to survive.

The national survey was conducted between 23rd and 30th of June among 1,530 respondents.

The interviews were conducted in Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt Kenya, Nairobi, Northern, Nyanza, South Rift, Western

The aim of the poll was to find out the state of the economy as experienced and perceived by Kenyans.

Some of the topics covered included the recently passed 2023-24 Budget including the Finance Bill of which the housing levy constituted a highly contested element.
