Nairobi Governor Sakaja
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja now says he will do away with the Green Park Bus Terminus.
According to Sakaja, the Terminus failed to achieve its intended purpose.
He says his office has plans to instead put up a mega-conference facility on the parcel of land, to recoup its high value in the city.
Further, he notes that the Green Park terminus which was built by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has never been utilized after four test runs failed.
The construction of the Green Park Bus Terminus cost of Ksh. 180 million
“The Green Park Station is the most prime piece of land in East Africa, 5 acres in the CBD. It was not supposed to be a bus terminal. All of the trials that have been tried even during NMS time failed,” Sakaja spoke through a local media house.
NMS conducted 4 test runs of the terminus which all failed after the revelation that it causes huge traffic jams.
The Green Park Bus terminus was meant to decongest the Nairobi Central Business District, however despite retired President Uhuru Kenyatta inspecting the terminus three times last year, it was never opened to the public.
The park has commercial offices, shops, supermarkets, eateries, an abolition block, cleaning and management services, a police post, an operating dispensary and an ablution block.
“Picture this, you land in Nairobi from abroad and in five minutes, you exit the expressway into the centre. There is a mall and other facilities. That is something we’re exploring doing under Public-Private Partnerships. People have expressed interest in building hotels in the conference facility,” Sakaja noted.
