Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni will today meet Members of Parliament (MPs) from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to discuss the controversial anti-homosexuality bill passed by parliament in March.

According to NRM parliamentary caucus chairperson Denis Obua, the meeting will take place at State House in Entebbe.

The bill, which local media say Mr Museveni is likely to sign into law, will see anyone engaging in acts of homosexuality facing 20 years in jail and a death penalty for convicts of aggravated homosexuality.

The proposed legislation has attracted global condemnation, with the US threatening sanctions on Uganda if the bill is enacted into law.

The White House has warned Uganda of possible economic “repercussions” if the bill becomes law.

“We would have to take a look at whether or not there might be repercussions that we would have to take, perhaps in an economic way, should this law actually get passed and enacted,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told journalists on Wednesday.

“So, we’ll have to take a look. No decisions. We’re watching this very, very closely. And hopefully, it won’t pass and we won’t have to do anything.”

The European Union has also expressed deep concern about the anti-homosexuality bill.

“The European Union will continue engaging with the Ugandan authorities and civil society to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, are treated equally, with dignity and respect,” it said in a statement.
