Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati of security in retirement.
According to the Gachagua, Chebukati antagonized dangerous people during his tenure hence the need to be protected.
This is after chaos erupted at the Bomas shortly before Chebukati announced the 2022 presidential election results, with IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera and commissioners Irene Masit, Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang’aya disowning the results.
Gachagua then said that Chebukati, and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye stood up for Kenyans.
“As a responsible government, we have made an adequate arrangement that in your retirement you have full protection and security to enjoy your life without fear so that you are safe because those are not good people,” he said.
The Attorney General Justin Muturi also held the same sentiments as Gachagua.
“Let us emulate Chebukati’s work. You are not retiring. I hope this administration led by Ruto finds some other place for you to continue leading this country with that kind of resolve,” he remarked.
The terms of office for Chebukati and commissioners Molu and Guliye, came to an end on Tuesday 17th of January 2023, after six years of service.
Chebukati earned Ksh 39,916,800 while the two commissioners earned Ksh 33,056,136.
Chebukati is also entitled to a Ksh 40 million mortgage while the two commissioners will get up to Ksh 30 million.
