Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that Cargo and passenger revenues from the Standard Gauge Railway rose 7.8 percent to 7.1 billion shillings in the six months to June.

The passenger train crossed the 1 billion shilling mark in a half year period for the first time since the train was launched.

The  passenger train raked in 1.24 billion shillings from 829 million  shillings.

The cargo service grew to 6.17 billion shillings in the six months from 6.04 billion shillings.

The data from (KNBS) shows that the collections were largely driven by a spike in the number of passengers in the period is the highest in the first half of the year since the SGR started operations in 2017.

The growth reflects the surge in passenger traffic as the SGR sold 1.121 million tickets in the first half of 2022.

This was marked at 48.7 percent from 754,313 tickets over similar period a year ago.

SGR operates passenger services from Nairobi to Mombasa and an inter-county service with stations at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi, and Mariakani stations.

Passengers pay Ksh1,000 on economy class seats and Ksh3, 000 for first class, while children below three years are not charged any fee.

However those between 3-11 year pay half the price adults pay on economy and first-class tickets.
