Incumbent Lamu Women Rep Ruweida Mohamed has been announced MP elect for Lamu East constituency.
Contesting on a Jubilee party ticket, Ruweida garnered 5,498 votes in the race that featured four candidates.
United Democratic Alliance’s Shariff Athman who is the current MP attained 4,663 votes.
Orange Democratic Movement party’s Shekue Kahale Mwanati came in third with 2, 515 votes and Abadii fourth with 1, 369 votes.
Ruweida is the first woman to occupy the Lamu East Member of National Assembly seat.
Addressing the press, she promised to deliver in her promises of empowering women and the youth, among others.
“I was the only female contestant in this particular race but I wasn’t deterred. I knew the time had come for Lamu East constituency to vote for change. I thank all for believing in women’s leadership. I want to assure you that I will do all it takes to ensure Lamu East constituency attains the change you deserve in terms of development, education, security, infrastructure, health, water and fishing among others,” said Ruweida.
“ As the MP of this region, I will effectively address the issues of the most vulnerable people in our communities, empower people to take lead in informed decisions, and embrace public participation,” she added.
