Nigeria’s choice of ruling party running mate sparks row

Christian organizations in Nigeria have pledged to vote against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

This is after its presidential candidate Bola Tinubu named Senator Kashim Shetima as his running mate.

According to the Christian Association of Nigeria both Tinubu and Shetima are Muslims, thus their presidential ticket lacks religious balance.

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria also says it will advise its followers against voting for APC.

However Tinubu has defended his choice saying he chose competence and integrity over religion.

His main rival Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party who is a Muslim, has picked Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who is a Christian as his running mate.

Meanwhile, it appears to be the start of a new crisis for Tinubu as some members of the APC party have started to react to the development.

While Senator Ishaku Abbo from Adamawa State has allegedly resigned from all Tinubu’s campaign groups, another member of the party and legal practitioner – Bwala Daniel has also resigned from the party.

According to Daniel, Tinubu’s choice is insensitive to the unity of the country.

Earlier this year, the Christian and civil society organizations warned against fielding Muslim-Muslim tickets for the February 2023 election.
