Nigerian Airline Operators Suspend Planned Operations Shutdown

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have called off a plan to ground domestic flights from today in protest at the rising cost of aviation fuel.

The operators say the hikes have been triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

However they say flights will now go ahead as talks with the government continue.

This is after they were given some assurances by the state.

The announcement comes as a huge relief to thousands of air travellers whose plans could have been disrupted.

AON, which represents Nigeria’s nine domestic carriers have been complaining about airlines having to subsidize services over the last four months.

There have been many flight cancellations and delays since March, often blamed on a shortage of jet fuel.

The price of tickets has also tripled on some routes in recent weeks.

Despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria imports almost all its jet fuel.
