Former Mt Elgon MP John Serut succumbed to cancer earlier today at Nairobi Hospital.

His family says the legislator died at 3:45am.

“When I viewed his body it didn’t strike me immediately that he was dead. He looked like he was sleeping. Let him rest, he has fought a good fight,” said the deceased’s daughter Michelle Serut.

Serut was taken ill two weeks ago and spent his last week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he died.

His body has now been moved to the Lee Funeral Home.

The family had in 2021, issued a public appeal to offset his medical bills which as of October had accrued to at least 20 million shillings.

Michelle took to twitter to issue a public appeal to offset her father’s medical bills.

“Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut and he’s been unwell for a while now. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020. Since then, we’ve had medical bills totaling to about Sh20 Million.

Healthcare in this country is quite expensive. Every time he’s been in hospital this year the bill has been no less than Sh3 million.” said Michelle.

Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects multiple organs like the kidney and liver.

The late MP is survived by a wife, five children and three grand daughters.

Although he was a notable figure from the Nyayo era, Serut also faced public criticism with some Kenyans accusing him of getting involved with a militia group that terrorized Mt Elgon locals.

He however denied any involvement with the said militia groups.
