Lamu senator Anwar Loitiptip will today appear in court over charges of misuse of a firearm and causing injury.

This is after he surrendered to the police on Sunday over an alleged shooting incident that happened  at 2am on Saturday night in Nanyuki that left a woman nursing gunshot wounds.

According to a police report a 32 year old woman identified as Joy Makena was on Saturday night rushed to hospital with gunshot injuries on her right foot.

Officers who responded to the incident recovered a firearm, and 13 rounds of ammunition.

Laikipia East Sub-County Police commander John Tarus says Makena had reportedly quarrelled with the Senator before the incident.

We are conducting investigations and will be collecting statements of accounts from both parties before we make a decision on what charges to bring against the senator,” said Tarus.

The senator however says that he had been attacked while at a hotel in Nanyuki, forcing him to shoot into the air.

The truth is that I was attacked by a knife-wielding gang last night,” said Anwar.

Anwar told Laikipia County Criminal Investigations Officer Onesmus Towett that he acted in self-defence.
