IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati asks National assembly to enact laws ahead of 2022 polls

IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati now says the national assembly needs to enact all the laws needed for the forthcoming general election.

Speaking during a meeting with  faith based organizations, Chebukati said passing the laws late and close to a general election would negatively affect the preparation of the polls.

Chebukati decried the delay of the bills in the assembly saying international best practice demands that election laws should be passed two years before a general election.

Chebukati also asked the treasury to ensure funding to the commission is available in time to complete the procurement of the needed materials for the general election.

The commission has budget of around Ksh. 49 billion to carry out the 2022 general election on August 9th .

The commission is currently preparing for the mass voter registration starting in the month of October.

IEBC is targeting seven million potential voters with one more mass registration set for early next year.
