National Assembly justice committee approves Martha Koome as Chief Justice

The national assembly has approved Justice Martha Koome as the next Chief Justice .

This is after the justice and legal committee tabled the report of her vetting in the whole house.

Most Mps hailed her achievements in and outside the courts prior to being nominated by the Judicial service commission. 

The MPs also insisted that the first intray for Koome should be to make sure the judges that were approved by the JSC are sworn in by the president.

The name of Justice Koome will now be forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta for appointment and swearing in.

Justice Martha Koome has been a judge in the court of appeal since 2012.

She was runner-up for the UN’s Kenya Person of the Year Award “for her advocacy of the rights of children in the justice system” in 2020.

She has also served as a commissioner on the African Union’s Committee on the Rights and Welfare of Children.

Koome will be the first Kenya’s female Chief Justice .
