Tanzania’s main opposition Leader Tundu Lissu claims that the late Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli succumbed to Covid-19.
Speaking earlier today, he said he was surprised that Magufuli’s government continues to lie about the cause of his death. He said, “Magufuli died of corona.”
He also alleged that Magufuli died last week. His allegations come from the unexplained absence of Magufuli from the public which fuelled rumors of his ill health.
Lissu said, “President Magufuli did not wear a face mask. He actually denigrated anyone who wore face masks. He did not believe in vaccines, he did not believe in science.”
He added, “He placed his faith in faith healers and herbal concoctions of dubious medical value. And what has happened, happened. He went down with corona.”
Lissu further told Tanzanias that this is an opportunity to open a new chapter and build a country that respects the rule of law.
He said, “This is the time to open a new chapter for our country. This is an opportunity for national reconciliation which had been made impossible.”
Lissu added, “Now that Magufuli has passed, we will write a public letter to the government in which I and my colleagues will set out our position going forward, and our position is that we cannot afford to continue with Magufulism without Magufuli, meaning that the country must change.”
Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced a 14-day mourning period.
Lissu to return to Tanzania
Meanwhile, Lissu who is presently in exile in Belgium, now says he is ready to return to the country amid news of the death of President John Pombe Magufuli.
Lissu said, “I’ll go back to Tanzania, but my going is part of what I’m calling for, my return, and the return of many others who are in exile even in Kenya, It is time for Tanzanians to sit together to account for all the evils of these past 5 years, because you cannot have reconciliation without truth.”
