Machakos County Senatorial by-election is set for the 18th of March.

This is after the Independent and Electoral Commission (IEBC) changed the date from 23rd of March.

IEBC says the move is so that the 2020 national examinations can take place without the interference of the by-election.

KCPE and KCSE examinations are scheduled for 22nd and 25th of March respectively.

The highly contested senatorial race has narrowed down to three candidates.

They include; Mutua Katuku of Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, Agnes Kavindu of Wiper and UDA’s Urbanus Ngengele.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, who is also the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party leader, says his party stopped all political rallies.

He says, this is in compliance with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directives, to contain the spread of CoronaVirus.

“We are not going to hold public meetings because we are going to protect the lives of our people ”, said Mutua.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap Candidate  Mutua Katuku, says suspending his rallies is in the interest of safeguarding the health of the public.

Katuku however says, he will continue to hold small rallies consisting of few people.

The by-election is to replace the late Boniface Kabaka who died in December.
