Manchester City and Real Madrid a step closer to the UCL quarter finals

Feb 25th 2021 Manchester City and Real Madrid took a step closer to the quarter finals of the champions league after registering wins in the last matches of the first leg of the UCL last 16.

City did not have any trouble dispatching Borussia Monchengladbach with goals from Bernado Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

Monchengladbach will now have to score twice in Manchester in two weeks time to have any hopes of qualifying for the last eight.

The win for City makes it 19 matches unbeaten in all competition but manager Pep Guardiola has continually dismissed a possibility of a quadruple of the Champions league, EPL trophy ,FA cup and the Carabao cup .

City Play Tottenham hotspur in the Carabao cup final and are still in contention for the FA cup playing Everton in the quarter final.

The blue side of Manchester is currently on top of the EPL table and ten points clear second placed Manchester United.

In the other match of Wednesday night ,Ferland Mendy scored a stunning late winner as Real Madrid clinched a hard-fought one nil win in the last-16 first-leg victory against 10-man Atalanta.

Manager Zinedine Zidane men looked like being left frustrated by a well-organised home side until Mendy curled in with four minutes left.

“We have to be at our best in two weeks time for the return leg .We also hope that our injury list will be minimal to finish the job ” Said Zidane after the tie.

Atalanta’s Remo Freuler was sent off after just 17 minutes for denying Mendy a clear goal scoring opportunity.
