OLYMPIC COMMITTEE MEET TODAY AMIDST FEARS OVER TOKYO GAMES

Jan, 27th 2021 – The  International Olympic Committee’s executive board meet today amid mounting uncertainty over this summer’s delayed Tokyo Games. There is pressure to have the games moved again but the action may lead to a total cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic.

So far, Japan has escaped the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, with far fewer deaths than the tragic numbers suffered in other parts of the world.

Last week, IOC president Thomas Bach said there was currently “no reason whatsoever” to believe the Games would not start as planned in July, and that there was no need for a ‘Plan B’.

Olympic Legend Sir Mathew Pinsent became the highest profile former athlete to call for cancellation saying that the idea of people flying from all over the world to gather in one place unvaccinated is unreasonable. He has suggested that the games be pushed to 2024.
