Natembeya arrested over alleged embezzlement of Ksh.1.4 billion county funds.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has been arrested by officers attached to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission EACC over alleged embezzlement of Ksh.1.4 billion in county funds.

This follows a raid at the governor’s home in Milimani Kitale where the officers are said to have frisked the home to unearth any exhibist to aid in the investigations

The investigation targets suspected irregularities in the Kenyatta Stadium upgrade, construction of county headquarters, and Tom Mboya Hospital.

The alleged three offences are said to have occurred  between the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years. EACC accuses the governor of influencing tenders and receiving kickbacks through proxies.

DAPK Party leader Eugene Wamalwas has condemned the arrest terming it politically motivated and a witch hunt against leaders opposed to the Kenya Kwana administration.

“DCI officers came here, they searched the home thoroughly, but found nothing. I have talked to the governor, and he is safe somewhere in Nairobi. This is the worst form of intimidation by the government,” Wamalwa said.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamed confirmed the raid, saying officers had accessed the home as part of the ongoing probe into alleged financial improprieties within the Trans Nzoia County Government.

The People’s Liberation party leader Martha Karua has condemned the raid of Natembeya’s home and accused the Ruto administration of tyranny

During his dramatic arrest, Kitale residents and Natembeya’s supporters led protests demanding the unconditional release of their county boss

The investigation comes amid growing scrutiny of county governments and increased calls for accountability over the use of public funds.
