UDA Resolves Secretary-General Dispute Following Khalende’s Self-Declaration

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has addressed the recent confusion regarding the position of secretary-general after lawyer Joe Khalende stormed the party headquarters on Tuesday declaring himself the new secretary-general.

UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire emphasized that the party operates under clear structures and decision-making organs, and no one can  declare themselves an official without following established procedures.

“UDA has a constitution, clear party structures and organs within which decisions are made and therefore somebody cannot come and declare him or herself an official of the party without following the laid down party procedures for him or her to be in the position they declare they belong to,” Mbarire said.

Mbarire also condemned Khalende’s move and also criticized the individuals who were mobilized to create chaos at the party headquarters in the morning. She reiterated that such actions undermine the party’s constitution and the established protocols for appointing officials.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the people who have been mobilised to come to the party to cause mayhem and hurt others. We are a party that believes in the rule of law, with very clear ways and means of dealing with conflict and do not in any way support what has happened today,” she said.

Earlier on Self Proclaimed UDA Secretary general Joe Khalenda sustained deep head cut injuries following an exchange of blows with supporters of Cleophas Malala at the party headquarters on Ngong Road .

Khalende’s group on Tuesday accused Malala of sabotaging UDA’s progress and the broad-based government initiative recently announced by party leader President William Ruto and endorsed by opposition leader Raila Odinga in the wake of nationwide anti-government protests.
