The Green Generation Initiative (GGI) is reshaping the future of education and sustainability in Kenya by turning schools into thriving centers of environmental stewardship, food security, and economic resilience.
Through innovative, community-driven projects, GGI equips institutions with practical tools to address climate change while improving daily livelihoods.
At Treeside Special School, GGI has introduced a pioneering permaculture and vertical hydroponic farming system.
The model integrates vegetable cultivation with a chicken coop, yielding up to 20 kilograms of produce per harvest and over 6,000 eggs each month.
This provides nutritious meals for students and creates surplus that is sold to generate income—helping the school meet operational costs and sustain the initiative long-term.
The hydroponic system, which uses 80% less water than traditional farming methods, is a testament to GGI’s commitment to resource-efficient, climate-smart agriculture.
By co-developing projects with schools and local communities, the organization ensures that its solutions are inclusive, practical, and deeply rooted in local needs.
GGI’s model has earned praise from global partners, including the Belgian Embassy in Nairobi, which operates a similar net-zero garden. “This can change life in Africa,” noted a representative, highlighting GGI’s work as a replicable model for institutions across the continent.
Looking ahead, GGI aims to scale this model to 100 more schools across Kenya, focusing on institutions with strong leadership and secure environments.
The initiative is especially inclusive, supporting schools that serve students with disabilities and other marginalized groups, ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey toward a greener future.By embedding sustainability into school systems, the Green Generation Initiative is creating living classrooms where students gain practical environmental knowledge while their schools become economically empowered.
Through this approach, GGI is building a foundation for long-term climate resilience, education, and community prosperity.
