8 suspects linked to Mawego police station attack remanded at Kamiti prison awaiting bond ruling

Eight key suspects linked to the  arson attack on Mawego Police Station where the late Albert Ojwang was detained before being transferred to the central police station will remain in police custody for an additional 7 days pending a bond ruling after they were slapped with terrorisms  charges

The suspects were arraigned in court on Tuesday after being detained under custodial orders issued by the Oyugis Law Court.

They were re-arrested on July 14, 2025, following closure of the miscellaneous application, and subsequently transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) headquarters in Nairobi, for arraignment with additional offences under the Penal Code.

The prosecution opposed the granting of bond, an application that was contested by the defense.

The trial magistrate, Hon. Richard Koech,  scheduled the matter for mention on July 22, 2025, for a bond ruling.

The accused have been remanded at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
