The Senate will proceed with a plenary session to hear the impeachment motion against Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo, setting aside a proposal to form an 11-member committee to handle the matter.
Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the hearings will take place on Tuesday, 8th July, and Wednesday, 9th July, allowing all senators to participate in the proceedings. The House will examine grounds cited for Guyo’s removal, including gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violations of the Constitution and various laws.
Governor Guyo was impeached after 16 out of 18 Isiolo MCAs voted in favour of the motion tabled by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana. The assembly accused Guyo of stalling critical development projects, failing to meet county revenue targets, and bloating the county executive by appointing 36 advisors and 31 chief officers despite Isiolo receiving the third-lowest revenue allocation nationally.
The governor is also accused of issuing two-year contracts to chief officers, which the assembly says created an “environment of fear and uncertainty” within the county workforce.
The impeachment process advanced despite a court order halting the assembly from proceeding, with the Senate affirming its mandate to hear the case. Senators will now determine whether the charges meet the threshold for the governor’s removal from office.
