Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has claimed that his official security detail has been withdrawn by the state in what he believes is retaliation for participating in the June 25 protests held in honour of victims of last year’s anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.
Speaking on Thursday, June 26, Owino described the move as a deliberate attempt by the government to intimidate leaders who align themselves with citizens’ calls for accountability and justice.
“Yesterday, I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future. Today, in retaliation, the government has withdrawn my official security,” said the legislator, who was visibly present at the protest held in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
Videos circulated online showed Owino being lifted shoulder-high by enthusiastic demonstrators, who sang and danced around him as the protests gained momentum in the capital.
The protests, largely organised by the Gen Z movement, were meant to commemorate lives lost in last year’s demonstrations. However, several areas experienced tension as police engaged protestors in running battles, leading to multiple injuries and at least 11 deaths across the country.
Owino termed the withdrawal of his security a “sign of a government that fears accountability.”
“Going after elected leaders who stand with the people is cowardly. I do not fear intimidation. I will not be silenced. Kenyans are my security,” he stated, adding that the voice of the public would only grow louder despite any attempts to suppress it.
The MP urged lawyers, civil society, and fellow leaders not to remain silent in the face of what he termed state repression.
“To the public: stay alert, stay united, and know that your leaders should answer to you, not threaten those who stand beside you,” Owino added.
His remarks come as concerns grow over the state’s response to the latest round of youth-led protests. Some government critics argue that the heavy-handedness, including reported abductions and use of excessive force by police, signals a shrinking space for dissent.
Owino has in recent months been increasingly vocal on national issues and has hinted at pursuing higher political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
