The Action Foundation Celebrates Children with Disabilities on International Day of Play

The Action Foundation marked the 2nd edition of the International Day of Play at Dagoretti Special School in Nairobi, bringing together over 100 children with disabilities from Dagoretti, Kibera, Mathare, Mukuru kwa Njenga, and surrounding communities.

The event featured inclusive play and social activities aimed at promoting inclusion and development.

Maria Omare, Founder and Executive Director of The Action Foundation, emphasized that children with disabilities have the same potential as any other children.

“Play is therapy—it’s a key pillar in every child’s development. We’re encouraging families to bring children with disabilities out of isolation and into play, education, and community life,” she said.

Since 2009, the foundation has reached over 25,000 children and families in Nairobi and plans to expand to Kajiado, Kilifi, and Samburu counties.

Omare noted that stigma and lack of awareness keep many children hidden, delaying early intervention.

“Only 15 percent of identified children with disabilities participate in play due to stigma and lack of family support,” she added.

Michael Mwangi, Head of Occupational Therapy at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, underscored the role of therapeutic play in helping children reach developmental milestones.

“For children with disabilities, play is not just fun—it’s essential therapy,” he said.

Francis Omanyala, Principal of Dagoretti Special School and National Chairman of the Special Needs Board, praised The Action Foundation for promoting socialization and growth through play.

He urged the Ministry of Education to invest more in sports for learners with special needs.

“Sports can empower them to explore talents and become productive citizens,” he stated.

The Foundation offers free therapy services at its Dagoretti Therapy Centre, focusing on a wide range of developmental disabilities, especially cerebral palsy.
