Six Police Officers Linked to Albert Ojwang’s Death as IPOA Probes Tampered CCTV and Torture Claims

Six police officers have been named in connection with the arrest of teacher and influencer Albert Omondi Ojwang’, whose death in police custody has triggered public uproar.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) told the Senate that Sergeants Sigei and Wesley Kirui, along with Constables Dennis Kinyani, Milton Mwanze, and Boniface Rabudo, arrested Ojwang’ on 7th June at the Leaders Centre in Homa Bay County before booking him at Mawego Police Station.

He was later transferred to Nairobi Central Police Station, where he was found unconscious and pronounced dead at Mbagathi Hospital. A post-mortem ruled out suicide, indicating he died from blunt force trauma to the head, neck compression, and extensive bruising.

Appearing before the Senate, IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Mwangi disclosed that the CCTV system at the OCS office had been tampered with. The recording device was seized and forensic analysis confirmed interference, indicating possible foul play.

IPOA said it had secured statements from the arresting officers, collected blood samples, obtained police documents, and identified a fellow detainee as a potential witness. However, key steps remain, including further forensic analysis and additional interviews.

The IPOA team assured the Senate that they will carry out a full and independent investigation.
