ODM leader Raila Odinga has condemned the death of Albert Ojwang’, a trained teacher who died in police custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi after being arrested over a social media post deemed offensive to a senior police officer.
Ojwang’ was picked up from Homa Bay and transported to Nairobi, where he later died in unclear circumstances, prompting public outrage.
Odinga questioned the legality and motivation behind Ojwang’s arrest and transfer, stating, “Nobody knows who gave the orders for Mr. Ojwang’ to be arrested and ferried all the way to Nairobi, and yet that person should be answering to Kenyans.”
He described the case as part of a disturbing trend of police brutality and unaccountable law enforcement, warning that such incidents are undermining public trust and pushing the country toward instability.
“When citizens can no longer tell the difference between police injustice and mob injustice, we are staring at the reality of failure as a nation,” said Odinga.
He called on the National Police Service to take full responsibility and conduct a credible investigation, stressing that “accountability is not optional.”
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched investigations, and officers who were on duty during the incident have been interdicted.
