The Ministry of Health has abolished mandatory attachment fees for Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students in all level 6 hospitals across the country.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale made the announcement on Wednesday, 4th May 2025, citing unfair charges levied on students by public referral hospitals. Speaking at KMTC headquarters in Nairobi, Duale condemned the trend, terming it “unacceptable,” especially for institutions under his ministry.
“One of the issues raised by the KMTC board was the high fees charged for student attachments. This will no longer happen in level 6 hospitals,” he said, highlighting Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) as an example, where students reportedly pay up to Ksh.10,000.
Level 6 hospitals are national referral facilities offering advanced care and are under the national government. These include KNH, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, KUTRRH, Mathari Hospital, and others.
Duale also revealed plans to consult with the Council of Governors and President William Ruto to standardise attachment fees across devolved health facilities, where disparities persist.
He emphasised that the decision would help restore public confidence in the health sector and ensure fair access to practical training for all medical students.
