JLAC Approves Erastus Ethekon as IEBC Chairperson

The National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) has approved the nomination of Erastus Ethekon Edung as the new Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a report tabled before the House on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, JLAC also endorsed the appointment of six other nominees as IEBC commissioners following their vetting on 31st May.

Those approved include Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.

The National Assembly is now expected to debate and either adopt or reject the committee’s recommendations.

During his vetting, Ethekon said: “I will play my role as Chairperson in that I will be guided by the laws of Kenya, and through that fidelity to the law, I should be able to follow all the laid down processes that will lead us to credible, free, verifiable elections.”

He also dismissed claims of bias over his past working relationship with former Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok, stating: “For the record, Honourable Chairman, not even close, not at the clan level, let alone family. We come from different villages and have no relationship whatsoever, whether by marriage or extended family.”

President William Ruto nominated the seven following recommendations by the IEBC Selection Panel led by Nelson Makanda.
