Rights Activist Boniface Mwangi has been found alive in Ukunda after being held incommunicado in Tanzania for over three days.
His family says Mwangi was deported by road following his arrest in Dar es Salaam on Monday while attending a court hearing involving Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
He has been rushed to the hospital for medical review although his condition remains undisclosed.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi has also confirmed Mwangi’s release, following diplomatic pressure and calls for consular access.
“The Ministry notes that, despite several requests, officials of the Government of Kenya have been denied consular access and information to Mr. Mwangi. The Ministry is also concerned about his health, overall wellbeing and the absence of information regarding his detention,” the letter by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read in part.
Human rights groups and Kenyan officials had urged Tanzania to honour international conventions on consular rights and the protection of foreign nationals and had threatened to stage demonstrations at the Tanzania high commission today.
Following this Police had beefed up security at the Tanzanian High Commission In the Nairobi central business district to avert unrest.
Anti riot police had been stationed along key roads and installations in full gear in anticipation of possible unrest should activists proceed with their planned protests against Mwangi’s detention.
