Dp Gachagua says Nyachae was the prefered candidate picked by IEBC selection panel

The former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized the appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon to the chairmanship of the Independent Electoral of Boundaries Commission and accused President William Ruto of partisanship

Speaking to Kisii vernacular stations this morning, Gachagua has alleged that chair of the Council of the Kenya School of Government Charles Nyachae was the best candidate as preferred by the IEBC selection panel but shortchanged by the head of state.

Gachagua alleged that unresolved conflicts between Ruto and Nyachae’s late father, Simeon Nyachae, drove the decision not to nominate him.

He has pointed an accusatory finger to the head of state for settling scores with the Kisii region over  an incident in 2007 

“We have received reports from the panel that Charles Nyachae was the top contender for the IEBC chair seat. The president was given two names, and he dismissed Nyachae,” Gachagua alleged.

According to Gachagua, Nyachae’s experience as the chair of the implementation of the constitution commission and a judge at the East African Court of Justice made him the perfect candidate.

He further noted that Nyachae’s own wealth and prominence would have helped in his performance of the job without outside interference.

National Assembly has set May 26th as the date the approval hearings for the chair and 6 shortlisted commissioners of the IEBC will be conducted

National Assembly Clerk Samwel Njoroge announced that the departmental committee on Justice and legal affairs  has received by the names of the nominees as referred by the speaker of the national assembly 

According to the schedule, Ethekon, the nominee for IEBC chairperson, will be the first to face the George Murugara-led panel.

The National Assembly has invited Kenyans to submit their views on the suitability of the nominees by submitting sworn statements with supporting evidence contesting their suitability.
