ICJ Dismisses Sudan’s Genocide Case Against UAE Over Lack of Jurisdiction

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has dismissed Sudan’s case against the United Arab Emirates, ruling that it lacks jurisdiction to hear allegations of the UAE’s complicity in genocide during Sudan’s ongoing civil war.

Sudan had accused the UAE of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a conflict that has devastated the country since April 2023.

The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has been locked in a brutal power struggle with Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

However, the ICJ stated it could not hear the case because the UAE had entered a reservation when it ratified the UN Genocide Convention in 2005, excluding disputes from being brought before the court without its consent.

The court’s decision marks a setback for Sudan’s legal efforts on the international stage, as it continues to grapple with internal conflict and widespread humanitarian crises.
