Two die and tens injured in Majengo protest after killing of a teen by suspected police

Two people have been killed as 8 others sustained gunshots wounds following chaos that erupted in Majengo area in Nairobi in the aftermath of a death of a 17 years old boy who is reported to have been killed by police officers

The Kenya National human right commission has identified one of the killed as  Dennis Muthui, and has been transferred to the Nairobi Funeral Home while the whereabouts of the second body remains unknown after police took it away.

The national Police ​Spokesperson Michael Nyagah explained that 17-year old Ibrahim Ramadhan Chege was being pursued by undercover officers on Monday evening when he was fatally shot during a confrontation between the police and local youth.

According to a statement released by Nyagah, the boy succumbed to his injuries around 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday while receiving treatment for the wounds he had sustained.

“The incident began when two plainclothes officers in Majengo’s Gorofani area attempted to arrest a young man believed to be carrying a bag of cannabis,” Nyagah said.

Haki Africa’s Executive Director Hussein Khalid has blamed the violence in Majengo on police action and called on IPOA to launch investigations.

This Wednesday morning, we woke up to very devastating news of a young man, year old, who was shot dead by police. It is very unfortunate that we are witnessing very bad incidences in our communities that are perpetrated by the police.” Hussein Khalid said. 

The Kenya Red Cross has attended to 37 casualties following protests in Majengo, Nairobi, with two critically injured individuals evacuated to Kenyatta National Hospital and one to Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Red Cross announced that it had set up a triage post at Riatha Mosque to provide immediate medical assistance.

“This morning, Kenya Red Cross first responders attended to 37 casualties following protests in Majengo, Nairobi. Two critically injured individuals were evacuated by @EMS_Kenya to Kenyatta National Hospital, while one was taken to Pumwani Maternity. Our teams set up a triage post at Riatha Mosque to provide immediate medical assistance,” the statement read.
