Harambee Stars will play their home Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier games in Uganda because Kenya does not have any Confederation of African Football (CAF) confederation approved stadiums.
Football Kenya Federation CEO Barry Otieno confirmed that Kenya will play its against Zimbabwe in Uganda next month.
“We would want to play at home because it comes with the advantage of fans coming to support their team; fans are a physical element and part of football.
“However, our stadiums that we would have used for the national teams have been closed and are being renovated so that they can meet the CAF standards ahead of CHAN 2025, set for January. As a result, CAF has been visiting Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania for inspection to check the level of preparedness, so there is little time left,” he explained.
Both Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani have been closed for renovations.
And there are no other stadiums to host high-magnitude matches.
Barely a month ago, Sports PS Peter Tum promised to have Nyayo Stadium ready to host both the CAF continental and AFCON qualifiers.
However, as it stands, Nyayo did not impress the CAF inspectors who visited last month, as Kenya prepares to host the 2025 African Nations Championships (CHAN) in January 2025, alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
