Don’t demolish houses in mukuru, Odinga warns Ruto

The Azimio coalition has said the government has exhibited unpreparedness to respond to the ongoing flooding crisis caused by the heavy downpours which the weatherman predicts will intensify in the coming days.

The coalition leader Raila Odinga has criticized the demolition of structures at the Mukuru Kwa Reuben in Nairobi without providing alternative homes for the residents

Odinga wants the state to revert the decision and construct houses for the residents before evicting them noting that the flooding situation is a national disaster

“These people should not demolish houses in Mukuru kwa Njenga, if they try to do so call us. If they want to relocate people, first they should build good houses for them before demolishing them.

“There is no need to demolish people’s homes when there is no place for them to go, citizens are not animals,” said Raila.

Resident along riparian land, flood prone areas and those in high risk areas earmarked for immediate evacuation as notified by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki were urged to vacate their places by 6:30pm

President Ruto directed the Ministry of Interior to enforce the relocation notices without fail.

“We have agreed that all those living along the riversides, in what is called the riparian reserve, starting from tomorrow, we will issue them vacation notices.

“Forty-eight hours from tomorrow, everyone should have vacated that area in the whole of Kenya because we do not want to lose the lives of citizens. As things stand, we will continue to have rains and floods will worsen,” Ruto announced on Tuesday.
