I will govern with humility – Senegal’s Faye

Senegal’s President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye has pledged to lead with humility and transparency.

His main rival, Amadou Ba, has conceded defeat, paving the way for Faye, a 44-year-old political newcomer, to become the youngest president in the country’s history.

Faye expressed gratitude to the Senegalese people for choosing him and emphasized a break from the past.

He promised to govern with humility and transparency, with a focus on national reconciliation following three years of unrest and political crisis. Additionally, he vowed to combat corruption, rebuild institutions, and address the cost-of-living crisis.

The outgoing President Macky Sall was thanked by Faye for overseeing a successful election. While the final results are pending official announcement by the Constitutional Council, provisional results indicate Faye’s strong lead with approximately 53.7% of the vote compared to Ba’s 36.2%.

Faye’s victory comes shortly after his release from jail less than two weeks ago.
