Rwanda’s ruling party, the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi), has officially chosen incumbent President Paul Kagame as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election in July.
During the party’s congress in the capital city of Kigali on Saturday, Kagame secured an overwhelming mandate with 99.1 percent of the vote.
in his acceptance speech, Kagame acknowledged the trust vested in him to continue the country’s developmental efforts.
He highlighted the significance of nurturing the next generation of leaders within the RPF-Inkotanyi, encouraging members to look beyond his tenure and actively consider the future leadership of the party.
The party’s commitment to a forward-looking approach was further underscored as they unveiled a list of 70 parliamentary candidates and presented their manifesto outlining key goals for the next five years, contingent on winning the upcoming elections.
This congress followed nationwide party primaries held in February, during which flag bearers were selected. Looking ahead, nominations for the positions of president and members of the lower chamber of parliament are slated to take place from May 17 to May 30. The elections themselves are scheduled for July 15, as per the Rwanda National Electoral Commission’s timeline.
