Liberia’s leader sets up task force to fight corruption

Liberia’s President, Joseph Boakai, has taken a decisive step in the fight against corruption by establishing a task force aimed at cracking down on corruption and recovering stolen state assets. The president has directed this task force to identify and prosecute any senior officials involved, encompassing both current and past government figures.

In an executive order, President Boakai emphasized the importance of returning assets “wrongfully acquired at the expense of the government and people of Liberia.

” The primary goal is to curb the pervasive menace of corruption that has engulfed the country, and individuals found to have purchased government assets illegally will be compelled to return them.

The president’s order also outlines measures to address individuals suspected of siphoning off public assets and living outside of Liberia. In such cases, extradition may be pursued to ensure accountability for those involved in corrupt practices.

Funding has been allocated to support the task force in its efforts, and the team is set to commence its work immediately. President Boakai, who made anti-corruption a focal point of his campaign last year, reiterates his commitment to tackling corruption head-on.

His victory in the election was followed by a runoff, where he secured over 20,000 votes, defeating former President George Weah.

George Weah’s presidency faced allegations of corruption and drew criticism for the perceived excesses of senior officials. Since assuming office in January, President Boakai has urged former officials to promptly return government assets in their possession, signaling a determined stance against corruption in Liberia.
