A Call To Action on World Obesity Day

World Obesity Day is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness about the growing epidemic of obesity and its impact on individuals and communities around the world.

The World Health Organization estimates that about 1.9 billion people around the world will be living with obesity in 2035 with childhood obesity expected to increase by 100% between 2020 and 2035.

In Kenya, the situation is quite alarming, with statistical projections  indicating that over 9.5 million people will be living with obesity by 2035 if measures are not put in place to address the situation.

One of the key factors contributing to the obesity epidemic in Kenya is the shift towards processed foods, driven in part by food insecurity caused by ongoing drought conditions.

The link between obesity and cancer and other terminal illnesses is well-documented, with research from the Centres of Disease Control highlighting the body changes associated with excess weight that can lead to an increased risk of certain types of cancer. This underscores the importance of promoting healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices to prevent obesity and its associated health risks.

According to Harvard School of Public Health. Some of the best obesity prevention strategies include:

1.Choosing healthier foods (whole grains, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and protein sources) and beverages.

2.Limiting unhealthy foods (refined grains and sweets, sugar, potatoes, red meat, processed meat) and beverages (sugary drinks).

3.Increasing physical activity.

4.Limiting television time, screen time, and other “sit time”.

5.Improving sleep.

6.Reducing stress.

As we mark World Obesity Day, there is a call for action and need for individuals, communities, and policymakers to come together to address this pressing health issue by raising awareness, promoting healthy living, and advocating for policies that support access to nutritious foods and physical activity.

Let’s take action today to combat obesity and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
