Uganda stuns Kenya to become new U18 CECAFA Champions

Uganda led by two goals to one in the extra time against Kenya in the Cecafa Under 18 championships at the Jomo Kenyatta Mamboleo stadium in Kisumu county.

Mutebi took advantage of a defensive blunder to send the ball in the back of the net within a few touches in the first half of the extra time.

The finals entered extra time after Uganda’s Batiibwe Okello leveled Kenya’s first goals in the 75th minute, 7 minutes after Syphas Owuor opened the scoreboard.

Owour received the ball straight from the Kenyan custodian Ibrahim Wanzala and controlled it by the side of his head before slotting the ball past the Ugandan keeper.

Junior Stars search for an equaliser and force penalties bore no fruits and Ugandans held on well to keep their lead until the final whistle.

Despite the loss, Kenya bagged two individual awards with Ibrahim Wanzala who provided an assist for Stars’ goal winning the Golden Glove after keeping three clean sheets.

Fans’ favourite Aldrine Kibet walked away with Golden Boot after bagging three goals in the championship.

Kenya qualified for the CECAFA U18 final after seeing off Tanzania 4-3 on post-match penalties and  Young Uganda Cranes beat Rwanda 1-0.

Rwanda have also emerged third placed in the competition after thrashing Tanzania 3-1.
