The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has asked the National Dialogue Committee for power to arrest and prosecute errant police officers .
While submitting its memo to the committee the authority’s chairperson Ann Makori, claims that they have faced several roadblock to investigate officers with suspect behavior hence denying victims rightful justice emanating from scores during the antigovernment demonstrations
Ipoa disclosed that the cases are still under investigation.
However, the authority did not disclose whether specific officers or command were held liable for the more than 60 deaths during the anti-government demos
On her part commissioner Doreen Muthaura says upon being granted the powers, the state wll save on resources used in investigations.
IPOA has the powers to recommend disciplinary action and prosecution against officers who might have violated the law.
IPOA also wants the forensic laboratory which is domiciled at the DCI headquaters made independent and formation of a police development fund.
“They (DCI) alter the evidence. In the report of the weapon used they say as per our analysis this weapon was not in the possession of the police as at the time of the action,” he said.
“We have made a proposal that this forensic laboratory should be given autonomy away from the DCI.”
