Gor mahia better known as K’ogalo will represent the country in the CAF champions league after winning their 20th league title on Sunday.
Gor Mahia beat Nairobi City Stars 4-1 on the final day of the league to overcome their title rivals Tusker FC who were playing in Western Kenya against already relegated Vihiga bullets.
Jonathan McKinstry charges needed a win to secure the title failure to which Tusker could have been champions after a 4-0 in Mumias.
Samuel Kapen got City Stars into the lead in the 48th minute but Benson Omalla equalized two minutes later after a goalkeeper blunder.
Peter Lwasa, Austin Odhiambo and Alpha Onyango then got the three goals that propelled Gor Mahia to the title.
Tusker Coach Robert Matano who had another good season said their season took a bad turn when they registered a series of draws towards the end of the season.
“We slept when we lost points against Wazito FC and Posta Rangers, that’s when we lost the league” he added.
Tusker FC however have another chance for silverware as they play Kakamega Homeboys in the FKF cup final . The winner of the cup will represent Kenya in the CAF confederation cup later in the year.
Kenya Police FC striker Elvis Rupia who scored in his side’s 2-2 draw with KCB was the league top scorer with 27 goals breaking the long standing record of Maurice Ochieng who scored 26 goals for Gor Mahia in 1976.
The new season will now have Mathare United and Vihiga bullets exit to the NSL and Gusii side Shabana and Murang’a seals have been promoted.
Wazito who finished 16th will go through a playoff with Mara Sugar who finished third in the NSL to determine who will play in the top flight next season.
