Kenya shines in Boston marathon despite Kipchoge disappointment

Evans Chebet  is the back to back Boston marathon champion after victory in the 127th edition on Monday .

Chebet came through in two hours five minutes and 54 seconds, to shake off the challenge of Tanzanian Gabriel Geay.

Chebet is just the sixth man in history to retain the Boston title and the first since 2008.

“I really understand the Boston course having raced here a number of times” Chebet said.

Two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge finished sixth in his debut Boston race.

Another Kenyan Benson Kipruto finished third clocking 2:06:06 after stcking with the leading pack for the better part of the race.

Five months after making her marathon debut with a sixth-place finish in New York, two-time world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri triumphed in her second race over the classic distance.

Obiri, clocked  2 hours 21 minutes and 38 seconds .Amane Beriso of Ethiopia finished second and Lonah Salpeter of Israel was third.

Chebet and Obiri walked away with approximately 20 million shillings each in prize money but that is before taxation.
