The first FIFA world cup to held in the middle east set a record with hosts Qatar becoming the first to be beaten in the opening game.

The 2-0 loss to Ecuador allowed the South Americans to start their FIFA world cup campaign on high at the Al Bayt stadium.

Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb brought Enner Valencia down in the box and the ex-West Ham forward stepped up to convert the spot-kick after his first goal was ruled offside.

Valencia headed in the second before half time to silence the loud Qatar fans.

Qatar next plays African Champions Senegal and one of the favorites Netherland but another loss will mean they pack their bags and watch from the stands.
