Religious leaders raise concern over disunity within the IEBC

Religious leaders in the country have expressed concern over what they term as division within the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) over the recently announced presidential results.

This is after four IEBC commissioners distanced themselves from the presidential results saying the process was opaque.

The leaders from different denominations say the division within the electoral body threatens the country’s peace and stability.

According to Chairperson of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops Martin Kivuva, they have commenced efforts to resolve the differences between the commissioners.

“We recognize the centrality of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in our political processes as enshrined in the constitution and the laws of Kenya. We have in this regard reached out to the Commissioners to pray and listen to them with a view of finding an amicable way forward,” said Kivuva in a joint statement by the religious leaders.

The leaders then lauded Kenyans for their peaceful conduct before, during and after the elections.

They also commended security agencies and other stakeholders for exercising restraint before, during and after the electioneering period.

The religious leaders were from; the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Council of Churches of Kenya, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims, the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya, the General Conference of Akorino Churches Assembly, the Hindu Council of Kenya, Seventh Day Adventists, and Shia Athnaashari Jamaat.
