Faith Kipyegon Bags Kenya Its First Gold Medal

Faith Kipyegon says she felt indebted for win the 1500 women’s race on Monday evening.

Two-time Olympic 1,500m Kipyegon clocked 3:52.96 to retain the title she won in Doha in 2019 as Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay took silver in 3:54.52. Great Britain’s Laura Muir settled for the bronze in 3:55.26.

Kipyegon’s mark is the 10th fastest time ever and is the 2nd fastest time run in the United States, after her time of 3:52.59 at the 2022 Prefontaine Meet.

Kipyegon won her 2nd gold medal, tying with 3 other runners – Hassiba Boulmerka (Algeria), Tatyana Tomashova (Russia), and Maryam Jamal (Bahrain), who have in the past posted similar achievements over the distance.

Kenyan have joined in celebrating her milestone. President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined the global athletics fraternity in congratulating Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon for her emphatic win in the 1500m race at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.


While lauding her efforts President Kenyatta, who is out of the country on a 3-day state visit to Seychelles, lauded Kipyegon for earning herself a badge of honor as the world’s greatest 1500m female athlete.


The Azimio la Umoja candidate Raila Odinga also weighed in her success and congratulated Faith for flying the Kenyan flag high in Oregon
