Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Peter Munya has  gazetted the suspension of fees and levies charged on imported maize for a period of ninety day effective on Friday 1st July 2022.

The gazette notice comes as the government grapples with ways to bring down the cost of living in the country. Munya has indicated that the move will help reduce cost of imports and allow millers to buy the grain at a cheaper price and in turn pass the reduced  costs to the consumer.

Currently a 2KG packet of Unga costs between 210- 220 shillings but the CS has said that he is confident the buying price will come down.

On Tuesday, Munya announced that the government suspended levies and any taxes imposed on imported maize in a bid to lower the prices of maize meals to manageable levels.

He spoke after meeting with several stakeholders to address the current crisis and added that the taxation imposed on the maize imported from Tanzania and other COMESA countries would be done away with and the sanction effected on July 1
