Rwanda prepares to receive UK asylum seekers

Rwanda is now set to receive migrants from the UK as their flight is scheduled to land today.

Rwanda’s capital, Kigali says, London will provide up to 144 million euros for the plan.

Additionally, it adds that migrants will be quickly “integrated into communities across the country.”

This comes as charities and a trade union, had launched an appeal against the government’s plan to send asylum seekers to the East African nation, after the High Court on Friday ruled the first planned flight could take place.

However, the president of the opposition party Development And Liberty For All argued that the country is not fit for this move.

“We have thousands of young Rwandans who do not have jobs. If you cannot give work to your own population, to your young people, if the Rwandan youth do not have jobs, how can the government promote work for these refugees who are going to come here to Rwanda?”, says Victoire Ingabire.

At the same time, many view offshoring asylum seekers as a tried-and-failed model claiming this will fuel smuggling trade.
