Benin Releases Nigerian Separatist Leader Igboho

Benin Authorities have released Nigerian separatist leader, Sunday Igboho Adeyemo.

According to his spokesman, Igboho was released to the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Banji Akintoye.

However details on his release remain unclear.

Igboho was arrested at a Benin airport in July 2021 on Nigeria’s request, while heading to Germany alongside his wife.

The separatist leader was accused of entering Benin illegally and planning to cause trouble however he denied the charges.

Currently, Igboho has filed a suit against the government of Benin for violating his human rights.

According to local media, the application was dated 10th of February 2022.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is accusing him of stockpiling weapons, calling for the break-up of the country and inciting ethnic killings.

He fled the country after a raid on his home by Nigeria’s secret police service in July 2021 where two of his associates were killed.
