Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria has warned politicians to keep proceeds of corruption away from the church.
Speaking on Wednesday from the Consolata Cathedral in Nyeri, Muheria noted that the clergy cannot tell the source of the donations once they get to the church.
He further called on the political class to maintain peace during the campaigning period ahead of the August elections.
“It is not the amount, it is where it has come from. Don’t bring dirty money in church,” he said.
Muheria’s sentiment came after President Uhuru Kenyatta, during the Sagana III meeting accused some churches of accepting donations which were proceeds of corruption.
“Some of the church leaders have been compromised by huge donations donated by corrupt leaders,” said the President.
The Head of State who was seemed to be attacking his Deputy William Ruto’s donations to the church said religious leaders should quit accepting donations from questionable sources.
“You come here to lie to us yet the money you are taking was supposed to be taken to Elgeyo Marakwet to construct a dam, so that the children of God could have access to water and also do farming.
But the money was pocketed by someone who now goes to church and donates KSh 2 million to you and you, in turn, sing his praises,” said Uhuru.
Meanwhile, those seeking electives posts in the August elections have been barred from donating money to harambee and churches.
This was influenced by the Elections Act that bars the political class from contributing to fundraising activities after the gazettement of the election date.
